URANUS

With the sphere of Uranus we leave the solar system proper and enter a zone of transition between the solar system and the galaxy. Saturn's traditionalism and conventionality can be seen as a kind of protective shell around the solar system. As long as we live within its boundaries we are relatively safe to develop our personal and social potentials.

But some aspect of us and of the universe we live in is also represented by Uranus, which beckons us to go beyond the relative safety of well-worn paths, to turn our circular ruts into never closing spirals.

When Saturn's responsibilities are (or are in the process of being) fulfilled, opportunities for innovation, originality and transformation may appear. These may come in the form of crises, for Uranus is often associated (at least in astrologers' minds) with sudden disasters and accidents (although many people, astrologers included, would say that there are no accidents).

If merely calling a crisis an opportunity doesn't help at first, we can endeavor to make it so, at least after the fact, by opening ourselves to the changes it brings, by allowing the changes to deepen and broaden our range of understanding and responses to life.

The main problem with meeting crises is that we tend to do so with the intent of returning everything to 'normal' as soon as we can.

A Uranian crisis has been truly worthwhile only when we don't return to normal afterwards, but are somehow permanently ennobled and transformed by the experience.

When we cannot cooperate positively with what Uranus represents, anarchy, rebellion for no constructive purpose, or irresponsibility may result.

URANUS IN CAPRICORN

Uranus spends about seven years in each sign as it moves around the zodiac, so is in that sign for everyone born during that period. All planets are important in the birth and progressed charts, but a sign influence which is identical for so many people does not indicate personal characteristics which will dominate an individual unless, of course, Uranus is a personal planet. Instead, it is what is known as a "generation" influence.

Here Uranus will give a rational, cool outlook and the ability to put problems into a coherent and logical perspective. However, Capricorn is the sign most sympathetic to conventional behavior and to doing "the right and proper thing" and Uranus is exactly the opposite, often encouraging shock tactics and perverse and unpredictable actions. Conflict can be the result.

In most cases, hopefully, there will be a weighing up of the contrasting possibilities when the occasion demands, and one will take the sensible line of action, neither causing embarrassment nor cramping their style.

This is a generation influence, so these traits will not be strongly emphasized in everyone born over a seven-year period. Nevertheless, if someone of this generation consults you for astrological advice in a few years' time, and you mention something along these lines, he or she will understand and perhaps may be able to add some additional and incisive comments.

A certain hardness is present, but the humanitarian side of Uranus will emerge in a very practical, down-to-earth way, and this generation will continue to improve the environment and cope with the problems of their time.
